Online gambling summit debates issues

2006-11-01 16:22:03

Representatives from countries across the globe have attended a new summit aimed at discussing the future of online gaming regulation.

Countries including Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Costa Rica and Antigua were present at the conference. The US declined an invitation to attend.

Speaking after the event, the UK's minister for sport Richard Caborn said that the event, held in Ascot, England, had established a "road map" that would lead to increasingly efficient regulatory moves.

"Those present today agreed to cooperate further in a number of key areas to ensure that gambling remains fair, crime-free and vulnerable people are protected," Mr Caborn said.

Antigua also pronounced itself as "encouraged" by the forum, praising its discussions in support of the island's anti-prohibition stance.

"I am encouraged to see this many countries come together to discuss rationally the issues related to online gaming. While at a very early stage, this international effort should be commended," said Mark Mendel, legal advisor to the Antiguan delegation.
