Number of UK online gamblers reaches six million

A new report investigating the effects of gambling upon the UK populace has found that almost six million Britons bet online, it has been revealed.

The figure contradicts government-commissioned research that was published earlier this year, which suggested that the number was just one million.

Compiled for a special BBC Panorama programme to be screened in the UK this weekend and entitled Online Gambling: Britain's New Obsession, the statistics calculate that 5.8 million Britons visited online gambling sites between April and September this year.

It is not clear, however, how many of those six million actually place bets once they have arrived at an online casino.

With new gambling laws set to come into place in September 2007, the findings reveal that there will be no shortage of subscribers to the government's ambitious plans for a series of new casinos to be set up across the UK.
