York casino gains council approval

2006-12-04 16:36:03

Prospective plans for a casino to be built in York, England have received a boost with the news that the city council had approved earlier legislation which permitted casino applications to be submitted for the first time.

With at least two proposals having already been drawn up by local entrepreneurs, York businessmen praised the decision and highlighted its potential benefits for the local economy.

"We've got the backing from the bank, we've got the land, and we've got the vision. There's an opportunity to create 200, 250 jobs - local jobs for local people," said Neil Horwell, part of a consortium that has announced plans to submit an £8 million proposal to the council, in conversation with the York Press.

"The proposal that we will be putting forward will not only include a casino, but also restaurants and bars in a part of the city undergoing redevelopment," Mr Horwell continued.

Wealthy entrepreneur Don Robinson is considering his own plans for a casino development within the area, the paper reports.
