£75,000 windfall for Irish ace

2007-01-12 16:07:13

The Irish Poker Championships have concluded, with one lucky winner scooping £75,000, it has been announced.

John Clancy won the first big tournament of 2007 when he fought off Scott Byron and Ciaran Burke to claim the top prize. Byron finished in second place, taking home £50,000, while third placed Burke won £36,000 for his efforts.

There could have been even more money in it for Clancy had he not agreed with Byron and Burke to flatten out prize money. The initial winner's fund totalled over £92,000, from an overall prize pot of £275,000.

Big names in attendance included Ryan Fronda, winner of the last British festival of 2006, along with stars from across Ireland, but it was Clancy who eventually triumphed.

The final hand saw Clancy out-kicking Byron, with an A9 to the latter's A6, meaning that the Dublin event, which featured over 300 players competing over the weekend of January 6th and January 7th, had a home-grown winner.
