British approve of new online gambling laws

2007-01-22 16:07:29

The much-publicised gambling legislation set to be introduced in the UK in September has found favour with UK consumers, it has been revealed.

A YouGov/PKR.com survey found that the government's plans to license and regulate online gambling were popular with the public, 63 per cent of whom agreed with the plans.

Similarly, an examination of non-gambling respondents found that over half agreed with the plans, with just 14 per cent disagreeing.

The new regulations have been criticised by sections of the British media in recent weeks, but a growing backdrop of pro-gambling findings suggest that the weight of opinion is in favour of greater gambling provision.

However, there remains controversy over the best way to implement such plans. With recent surveys revealing the extent of online gambling both at home and at work, the market for such pastimes seems likely to remain strong regardless of the way in which regulations are put into operation.
