Casino staff protest over pay

2007-01-26 16:12:39

Staff at Grosvenor Casinos in London have staged a protest over pay levels, it has been revealed.

The chain, which runs casinos at a number of venues across the capital, saw its staff walk out for 24 hours on Thursday morning.

Disputes have centred on a row regarding a proposed pay rise. A previous offer of a 3.5 per cent rise had not been accepted by the employees, who include cashiers, croupiers, valets and waiters and waitresses.

"Our members need an improvement on the 3.5 per cent the company imposed on them at the beginning of January, especially in the light of inflation now at 4.4 per cent and many feeling the 'real world' inflation rate is higher than that," said regional organiser of the Transport of General Workers' Union Rose Keeping.

Pay rates at online casinos have remained constant in the face of the growing threat from other sectors, with many gamblers now preferring to enjoy their favourite games from the comfort of their own home.

Employees had previously held a separate 24 hour strike on New Year's Eve.
