Super-casino to be built in Manchester

The UK's first Las Vegas style casino is to be built in Manchester, the Casino Advisory Panel has revealed.

The announcement ends months of speculation on the issue, but came as a surprise to most observers. Either London or Blackpool was expected to be named as the chosen venue, but in the end neither was successful.

Manchester will now play host to a giant complex that could include as many as 1,250 gaming machines and numerous other casino favourites.

Under the terms of Manchester's successful bid, the development will involve over £260 million of investment as well as a number of associated entertainment venues, including a hotel, nightclub, restaurants and bars.

"Manchester has an unrivalled track record in the delivery of major regeneration schemes so we are confident we have the expertise to deliver a world-class venue, creating thousands of new jobs for local people," said Manchester City Council leader Richard Leese, speaking to the BBC.

Kerzner International is thought to be the early favourite to secure a deal to help construct the 54,000 square feet venue.
