Government outlines rules for poker in pubs

2007-01-31 16:06:19

The forthcoming changes to the UK gambling laws which will see poker and other licensed games being available to play in pubs have been clarified by the government.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has published a consultation document on the subject, outlining how not only pubs but also clubs and political parties will also be able to hold such games.

Under the new rules prizes can total no more than £100 on any one day, with stakes limited to £5 per head. These numbers double in relation to games played in private clubs.

"Many people have enjoyed low stakes games like bingo, cribbage and dominoes in clubs and pubs for decades and there is no evidence of an increase in problem gambling or crime as a result," said sports minister Richard Caborn.

"We are removing the need for a fresh application to be made every time a licensee wishes to allow a new type of game to be played. Permitting very low stakes gaming […] will also help to keep gambling in the open and above board," he added.
