Malta behind UK regulations

Malta is firmly behind the new gambling regulations set to be introduced in the UK this September, it has been revealed.
The UK government aims to strengthen current legislation so that it can oversee online betting around Britain more easily. Sites such as Malta and Gibraltar have previously been popular locations for companies seeking to escape jurisdiction in other areas.
However, the Malta Independent has reported that a House of Lords discussion suggested that efforts were being made to support the UK's impending legislation.
"Representatives from both Gibraltar and Malta attended the government's international remote gambling summit held on 31 October 2006 where they, along with many other jurisdictions, indicated that they fully support the UK Government's intention to raise standards in on-line gambling regulation," Lord Davies of Oldham said to the House.
"Following the summit, we will continue to involve Malta and Gibraltar in the process for establishing international standards, which is now underway.
"The Gambling Commission will also continue to meet representatives of Gibraltar and Malta through their membership of the International Association of Gambling Regulators," Lord Davies continued.
Earlier this month a Maltese court of appeal refused to enforce a prohibitive gambling measure concerning an online bookmaker from Malta, originally made in French courts in July 2005.
