Decision day for Manchester casino

2007-02-15 16:44:07

A bingo hall in south Manchester is awaiting a council decision on the building of a new casino within the Buckingham Bingo complex.

The planned casino would be open until the early hours of the morning until six am Sunday to Friday, and until four am on Saturdays.

Door currently open at the bingo hall at 11 am and gambling starts at quarter past 12, beginning operation almost two hours earlier than the new casino would.

Chief executive of the bingo chain, Andy Cunningham, told the South Manchester Reporter that he thought the casino would add value to the site and would not be a large scale operation.

Mr Cunningham said to the paper: "Our customers are well aware of what they have to spend in their pockets. And we are supplying them with a service that doesn't exist in south Manchester."

However, many local residents are protesting about the development, believing that the location is too close to schools and family leisure facilities.

Buckingham Bingo's planning request was submitted before the Casino Advisory Panel's surprise decision to build the UK's first super-casino in Manchester.
