The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer could announce plans to regulate the online gambling industry in his Budget next month, it has been suggested.
It has long been known that the UK will extend the scope of its gambling laws later in 2007, but the March Budget could see Mr Brown outline plans to bring offshore companies onboard.
Recent negotiations between the government and online gambling firms stalled when the casinos recoiled from the prospect of having to pay tax on their winnings, but new rulings could nonetheless see an agreement being made.
The Daily Telegraph has reported that a change of heart could see Brown allow companies to remain offshore yet simultaneously secure a UK license, in return for paying a small amount of tax.
Land based casinos can pay up to 40 per cent of winnings in tax, but the online measures could be under five per cent, the Telegraph suggested.
The UK's first ever land-based super-casino was awarded to Manchester in January following months of intensive bidding from cities across the country.
