Lib Dems call for gambling committee to be reconvened

2007-02-26 15:58:38

The Liberal Democrats have continued their calls for the committee that scrutinised the UK government's gambling bill to be reconvened, following speculation that recent developments could be blocked by Parliament.

Speculation has mounted that the decision to build the UK's sole super-casino in Manchester will lead to governmental gambling plans being halted in the House of Lords if the decision is not reviewed.

The Lib Dems have now asked culture secretary Tessa Jowell to clarify her position in light of such speculation, and reaffirmed their commitment to a reconvening of the Joint Scrutiny Committee.

Citing the "continued growth in online gambling", shadow culture secretary Don Foster noted in a letter published on the political party's website that such factors had "sufficiently altered the gambling environment to convince me of the prudence of allowing the Committee to look once more at this issue."

Controversy over the super-casino decision first surfaced when it was suggested that Manchester may have considered building the structure in a separate part of the city to that for which the city's original bid was submitted.
