UK set to approve super-casino venue

2007-03-20 16:13:59

Politicians in the UK are to approve the selection of Manchester as the UK's sole super-casino venue, it has been suggested.

The Las Vegas-style attraction has caused controversy since its Manchester location was announced in January, with other bidders such as Blackpool expressing their disappointment at the decision on a number of occasions.

Last week a Parliamentary committee heard from sports minister Richard Caborn along with members of the Casino Advisory Panel, which made the original decision, in a special presentation on the subject.

Mr Caborn defended the project, with the Labour Party reportedly now pressuring members to back the plan, the Reuters news agency cites government sources as saying.

The final decision will be taken next Wednesday during a Parlimentary debate on the subject, with 16 smaller casinos also in the pipeline.

It is thought that further super-casinos could follow in the future should the Manchester venue prove to be a success.
