Reading to get new casino

Reading's Smallmead Stadium is to be replaced with a casino and racing complex, it has been announced.

The complex was approved last week following a planning meeting which stipulated that a free shuttle bus providing transport to and from the area be laid on, the Reading Chronicle has reported.

However, officials also expressed dismay that Grosvenor Casinos, which already has a presence in the area, had attempted to block the move.

"This is a long overdue improvement for Reading. The question of the strength of demand for gambling is an interesting one. But there is undoubtedly a demand for it," said councillor Tony Page, according to the Chronicle.

The casino will be operated by new site owners Stadia UK, becoming Reading's third alongside the Grosvenor Casino and the Reading Sporting Casino.

The planning committee's decision meant that seven years of speculation regarding the building of a new stadium can now be brought to an end.
