Gamblers' consideration of the risks involved in high money betting could be at risk if they are suffering from a lack of sleep, new research has shown.
A study from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, found that sleep deprived gamblers exaggerated to themselves the potential for reward while simultaneously downgrading the risks in their mind.
Players looking to win big may be better off making sure they are well rested, the study results implied, due to an area of the brain associated with the anticipation of reward being activated more readily in those who are tired, the United Press International has reported.
"Understanding why we make poorer choices when sleep deprived is important," said Michael Chee, co-author of the study.
"Most of us know of people who have stayed up all night on a gambling table, taking crazy risks that did not make sense and who lost more than they had because they did not walk out when it was sensible to," he added.
Online casinos open 24 hours a day are likely to prove better in this regard than land-based venues that are open only at night.
