Irish "spend more than £2.4bn on gambling"

2007-05-30 17:27:06

Gamblers in Ireland spent billions on betting over the past five years, it has been revealed.

The figures, presented at a conference in Dublin earlier this week, do not even take into account online or casino gambling, suggesting that the true figure is much higher.

But the new statistics nonetheless represent a significant jump in expenditure, with €3.6 billion (£2.4 billion) spent in 2006 alone.

This figure compares to the €1.6 billion (£1.1 billion) that was spent in 2001, according to the research.

The news comes as leading online software provider CryptoLogic secured the backing of its investors to move its headquarters to Dublin, Ireland.

"CryptoLogic's plan to establish a new corporate headquarters in Europe is about investing for our future," commented president and chief executive Javaid Aziz. The transfer of the firm's head offices is expected to take place within the next few weeks.
