Newham casino faces religious stumbling block

A religious organisation has asked an independent commission to stop the creation of a new casino in the capital.
The Christian People's Alliance (CPA) is concerned that Newham, a particularly deprived borough of London, will be adversely affected by the presence of a large casino.
If the CPA's submission to the Newham Mayor's independent casino commission is successful then developers could be prevented from building the 1,000-sq ft casino that is set to house 150 slot machines, with a maximum jackpot of £4,000.
"It is impossible for anyone who has Newham people at heart to agree to a large casino here," CPA group leader Alan Craig told Inspire magazine.
"On the evidence alone, the commission must reject the idea lock, stock and barrel."
Earlier this year, Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, warned that using casinos as a form of regeneration may not be the best way to revitalise communities.
