Stranraer council confirms casino bid

2007-07-17 16:08:29

A council in the south of Scotland has been told it can build a casino if still wants to continue with the project, it has emerged.

The newly-appointed culture secretary James Purnell has been writing to local authorities and the council in Stranraer has apparently confirmed it wants to build a casino, reports the BBC.

Russell Brown, MP for Labour Dumfries and Galloway, said the creation of a casino will boost the regeneration of the Stranraer's Waterfront area.

Last week, the prime minister called on MPs to give serious thought to the government's gambling legislation.

He also intimated that urban regeneration could be achieved in ways that did not involve gambling.

A government review into the matter is expected to be ready by September.
