MP posts internet spoof

2007-07-19 16:54:13

Torbay's MP, Adrian Sanders, has posted a spoof letter from the town's mayor on the internet regarding the Torbay's bid for a second casino.

The letter, pretending to be from Torbay's mayor, Nick Bye, to culture secretary James Purnell, out rightly rejects the idea of a second casino in the seaside resort town, reports the Herald Express.

Mr Purnell is writing to Torbay's councils inquiring to see if they wish to go ahead with plans for the casino. The casino is a major factor in the resort's plans for regeneration.

Mr Sanders said: "I am not opposed to gambling, I am opposed to a second casino for Torbay. If I was opposed to gambling I would be campaigning against the first casino.

"I think the Gambling Act of '68 should never have been changed. The laws are not as strict as they were."

Tourist authorities in England call Torbay the English Riviera due to its mild climate.
