Gambling sites see more visitors

2007-07-20 15:42:24

June saw a 13 per cent increase in the number of people visiting online gambling websites, according to new research.

Some 12.5 million people clicked onto sites with games such as poker and blackjack, proving that they may still be extremely popular with internet users.

The data, collected by comScore's Media Metrix system, found one portal which experienced a 17 per cent surge in the number of visitors to its site, while many others followed suit.

It was suggested that many of the extra hits may have been in anticipation of the World Series of Poker, which reached a climactic finale this week.

Psychologist Jerry Yang took home the top prize in the main event, which rounded off the tournament.

He won a total of $8.25 million (£4.02 million) and said he planned to give ten per cent of the cash to charity.
