Manchester 'to make case' for casino

2007-07-26 15:17:34

Proposals for a casino and leisure development in east Manchester are not totally dead in the water, the city council has claimed.

A meeting took place last week between local MPs and prime minister Gordon Brown to review the plans, it was revealed yesterday, after the go-ahead for the so-called supercasino was revoked.

And according to city council leader Sir Richard Leese, the council intends to press ahead with its campaign to ensure that all avenues for the facility are explored.

Indeed, the government has now indicated its intention to review the issue further and Sir Richard said the council was "looking forward to engaging with the review and making a powerful case".

"We and the government share the same objective, namely the delivery of thousands of jobs in east Manchester," he added.

Other locations considered for the supercasino included Blackpool and London.
