Manchester supercasino 'still a possibility'

A supercasino on the east side of Manchester could still be built if city chiefs get their way, according to a story in a regional newspaper.
The Manchester Evening News has reported that council bosses are continuing to press the government for the supercasino license that was promised earlier this year.
City council leader Sir Richard Leese and various MPs from Manchester have already met the prime minister, Gordon Brown, to discuss the future of the supercasino.
According to Sir Richard, who will make the case as part of a review led by Salford MP Hazel Blears, there is still a chance that the creation of Britain's first supercasino will get the go-ahead.
"We are looking forward to making a powerful case," he told the newspaper.
Mr Brown made it clear during a debate in the House of Commons earlier this month that he is not keen on the supercasino project and hinted that it should be scrapped.
This is despite the fact that a record number of Greater Manchester MPs are in his cabinet, one of whom is James Purnell, who is responsible for the gambling sector in the UK.
