Blackpool presses ahead with casino plans

2007-08-03 14:05:50

The seaside town of Blackpool is still set on building a supercasino despite the prime minister's lack of enthusiasm for the idea, according to one report.

Blackpool's development agency ReBlackpool, has submitted an application the council to build two casinos, three hotels and a conference centre on the site of the old Central Station.

ReBlackpool believes that a supercasino will help the north-west resort regenerate its fortunes.

Council leader Peter Callow told the Blackpool Citizen: "We have to show that Blackpool is still in business and that potential investors can still be attracted to the area - and that is what is happening."

Shortly after Gordon Brown became PM he told MPs that he thought there were better ways to regenerate Britain's towns and cities than building casinos.
