Blackpool Council approves twin-casino development

2007-08-08 11:09:11

Plans to create two casinos as part of a wider development of Blackpool have won the support of councillors.

The council has voted in favour of the project, although the government has yet to approve the scheme, reports the Blackpool Gazette.

ReBlackpool, the town's development agency, wants to build two casinos, three hotels and a conference centre on the site of the old Central Station.

It believes that the casinos will help the famous north-west resort regenerate its fortunes, which have been flagging in recent years.

ReBlackpool also said it wants to ensure the site is used to construct a major leisure development in order to attract private investment.

Councillor Brian Doherty sad: "This is not a new application - it has been on the table about two years and should have come to us last October but was delayed."

If the plan is approved by ministers, a 12,556 sq m casino will be built in the middle of the site and a 12,247 sq m casino will be erected on the north-eastern corner.

Council leader Peter Callow recently said that Blackpool has to show would-be investors that the town is still in business.
