Gaming adverts not allowed on children's shirts

2007-08-09 11:48:44

Casinos and other gambling organisations have agreed not to print adverts on children's replica football shirts and other merchandise aimed at youngsters.

Under a new agreement between the gaming industry and the government, gambling logos and other forms of promotional material must not be associated with children's products.

The new code of conduct comes after online casino company Mansion paid £34 million to have its logo printed on Tottenham Hotspur replica shirts.

However, some clubs are worried that the rules about children's football shirts are not clearly defined.

"We serve plenty of oversize kids who need an adult size. We don't want them to become walking billboards, however slow-moving, for gambling firms," a football official said.

James Purnell, the culture secretary, had threatened the gambling industry with legislation if it did not introduce voluntary measures.

The code has been backed by organisations including the British Casino Association and the Association of British Bookmakers.
