Gambling laws are "a mess"

2007-08-31 12:43:10

The gambling legislation which comes into effect on September 1sty has been described as "a mess" by one newspaper.

According to the Guardian, the Gambling Commission has failed to deliver "even the government's watered-down intentions".

The scrapping of the supercasino project and the fact that casino companies have declined to come to the UK is a demonstration of the commission's impotence, the paper said.

"A mere 14 online poker and casino operators have registered for UK licences and virtually none is a mainstream company," remarked the Guardian's Nils Pratley.

"The explanation is simple: nobody wants to pay tax at the UK rate of 15 per cent of gross profits."

Since Gordon Brown became prime minister, the government has effectively killed off the supercasino in east Manchester and imposed restrictions on casinos with regards to advertising.
