A study which claimed that a supercasino in Manchester would not lead to a rise in problem gambling is a victory for commonsense, one local reporter has said.
Writing for the Manchester Evening News, David Ottewell said the report reinforces the belief in the city that a supercasino is a good bet.
The report by Paul Bellringer, founder of charity GamCare and Professor Mark Griffiths from Nottingham Trent University strongly indicates that the casino would not lead to gambling addictions.
Given that the council, the people and the market want the casino, the report strikes a blow for those who are angry that the prime minister has made an apparent u-turn on the project, said Mr Ottewell.
In addition, the creation of Las Vegas-style establishment in England's second city would also boost the regional economy and create generate thousands of jobs.
"So here's the question: in what way would scrapping the supercasino be consistent policy-making, rather than just gesture politics? " he asked.
Earlier in the year, the Casino Advisory Panel recommended to the government that Manchester be granted a licence to build a supercasino.
