Casino-goers are not at risk, says expert

2007-09-18 15:25:40

London Clubs International has said that the British casino industry has been socially responsible and taken a proactive stance against problem gambling.

John Bruns, who heads up London Clubs, believes that gamblers are not generally at risk and are capable of making decisions that that free from the influence of others.

His comments come as the Gambling Commission prepares to release a report that will indicate up to 600,000 casino-goers and online gamblers are addicted to making a bet.

"These players have means and they choose to game," Mr Bruns said. "It's their form of entertainment. They are not at risk and they are not vulnerable."

A report commissioned by Manchester City Council said there is little evidence that a supercasino in east Manchester would lead to a rise in problem gambling in the area.

The study has been endorsed by Greater Manchester Police.
