If Gordon Brown changes his mind and a supercasino is built in Manchester, then one way of reducing problem gambling would be to introduce slot machines with time limits.
This is one of the proposals put forward by a joint report by GamCare and International Gaming Research Unit.
As well as two-hour time limits, the slots would also have onscreen clocks and keep a record of how long an individual had spent gambling at that particular machine.
"Manchester will look at national and international best practice and require the casino operator to follow it," the report stated.
"For example, requiring all gaming machines to have a built-in mechanism to allow a customer to set a limit on the time they play and a limit on the amount they gamble on the machine."
Earlier this week, a much-anticipated study by the Gambling Commission into the effects of gambling was released. It found that problem gambling has not worsened over the past eight years.
