Blackpool has been described as the "only genuine candidate" when it comes to hosting Britain's first supercasino.
James Naughtie, who presents BBC Radio 4's Today programme, said that like Las Vegas - the "oddest city in the world" - Blackpool is not afraid to hold onto its northern originality.
But he said that without a boost to its fortunes, Blackpool will survive but "slowly crumble".
"If there were going to be a supercasino, it would be the only genuine candidate. It exists in its own world, removed from everywhere else," he wrote in the Financial Times.
Earlier this year, Blackpool lost out to its big city neighbour Manchester in the competition to build the country's first supercasino.
But politicians from the seaside town raise such a fuss that the House of Lords rejected the entire supercasino project.
