Brown says 'no' to Blackpool supercasino

2007-10-09 09:11:46

Prime minister Gordon Brown has indicated that Blackpool is unlikely to get a supercasino, it has been revealed.

The Blackpool Gazette reported that Mr Brown "admitted Blackpool faces a challenging future - but appeared to rule out a supercasino as the solution".

Speaking at his monthly press conference, the premier is quoted as saying: "As far as two large supercasinos are concerned, I've said I feel there are better ways of regenerating those areas and that's what we're looking at at the moment."

Blackpool has been trying to lobby support for a supercasino since losing the bid to host one at the start of this year.

Manchester won the supercasino bid but over 60 MPs came out to protest the decision, throwing their support behind Blackpool.

Later in the year Mr Brown appeared to move away from the idea of supercasinos and all projects now look on hold.
