New gambling expert at University of Salford

Salford University has a new expert at its Centre for the Study of Gambling, Dr Jonathan Parke.

Dr Parke came from Nottingham Trent University and holds a PhD in Psychology of Fruit Machine Gaming.

He has been made a senior researcher and lecturer. He also apparently enjoys playing poker online and in the real world.

Speaking on the university's website he said: "I have always been interested in the world of gambling.

"I grew up in a seaside town so there was lots of arcade gambling going on - and my family used to like a flutter now and then."

Dr Parke has bought a house in Swinton and now owns a Manchester City season ticket - possibly not a popular choice in a city with such a heavy United fan presence.

He said that he would like to work to try and make gambling a more recognised and accepted academic subject.
