Manchester council has 'good chance of winning casino fight'

2007-11-22 16:38:35

Lawyers have told Manchester city council that it has a good chance of winning any legal challenge it may wish to make to the government's revised supercasino plans, it has been reported.

The opinions of legal professionals on the matter were revealed by the Manchester Evening News.

A plan is currently in place for the council to pursue a judicial review, if rumours that prime minister Gordon Brown is to scrap the supercasino idea and move ahead with 16 smaller casinos instead are proved true, according to the paper.

Manchester won the bid to host the supercasino earlier in the year, but Mr Brown put the idea on hold, saying he wanted to seek an alternative to the scheme.

If the council do not manage to get the casino - which will be built near the City of Manchester Stadium in Beswick - back on track, then it will apparently cost the region several million pounds.
