British casino mogul dies

2007-12-14 17:44:43

A northwest casino mogul who helped to create a vibrant nightlife in Merseyside during the swinging sixties has died.

John James, who found local fame after he opened the Kingsway Casino in Southport in 1962, passed away aged 75, reports the Southport Visiter.

Mr James, whose great grandfather helped build Blackpool Tower, came from a family of gambling entrepreneurs.

His family opened the Charlie Chester Club, which offered 24-hour gambling. He struck out on his own and bought the Kingsway Cafe on the Promenade.

He created a popular establishment in Southport that boasted not only a casino, but a cabaret, restaurant, bars and a dancefloor.

Mr James also opened the Prince of Wales club in Cardiff and the Casino Club in Port Talbot.
