Supercasino decision on the cards?

2008-01-04 17:10:39

A decision on whether a supercasino will be built in east Manchester could be made this month.

Prime minister Gordon Brown's review into the matter, which was announced in July, is due at the start of 2008 and Salford MP and communities secretary Hazel Blears will present the report to parliament.

Manchester City Council has said it will take the government to court if a supercasino is not approved.

Minister John Healey told the Manchester Evening News: "Civil servants have devoted a significant amount of time to the investigation of alternatives to regional casino-led regeneration."

According to the council, the establishment of a supercasino complex on the east side of the city would create 3,500 jobs.

Last month, Ms Blears refused to say whether she still supports the supercasino project, which was thrown out by the Lords.
