Sunderland casino to close?

2008-01-31 12:29:20

A Gala casino in Sunderland could be on the brink of closure this week, as bosses meet with staff to discuss the possibility of shutting down.

The gambling spot on High Street West opened in November 2005, but its profitability has been hit due to last year's smoking ban and an increase in tax, the owner told the local Echo.

North East Chamber of Commerce Sunderland spokesman Mick Thurlbeck said: "Sunderland has never been a bedrock for the casino industry in comparison with Newcastle and Middlesbrough.

"But it is a big hole in the regeneration area that we have to fill."

The consultation period will take six weeks by the owner's estimates and then a decision will be made.

According to the World Casino Directory, the Gala is the only casino in Sunderland. This compares with nearby Newcastle which has several, including a Grosvenor and an Aspers.
