Regional casinos to get 'govt go-ahead'

2008-02-07 14:24:15

Plans to build 16 regional casinos in Britain will be given the go-ahead in the next few weeks, according to a government source.

Reports suggest the source has revealed that the regional casinos will be approved but the supercasino - proposed to be sited in Manchester - will be struck from any plans.

Last July, the prime minister did away with the idea of constructing the supercasino in the north-west city, with the government then beginning a review of the 2005 Gambling Act.

Leeds, Southampton, Great Yarmouth, Middlesbrough, Solihull, Hull, Milton Keynes and Newham in London will get large casinos if the plans do get the green light, while smaller casinos will be built in seven other locations.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport said that no decision had yet been reached and that when it has been reached, it will be announced.

Originally some 27 authorities bid for the rights to be the location for the country's first supercasino.
