Europe's internet gambling industry 'worth billions'

2008-02-18 11:57:12

Gamblers in Europe are betting approximately €5 billion (£3.76 billion) online every year, it has been revealed.

MEP Arlene McCarthy told the Kuwait News Agency this amount was generated by 3.3 million regulars, according to Card Player - which equates to more than £1,100 wagered on average per person.

Ms McCarthy is the chairwoman of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee for the European Parliament, the body in charge of coordinating and harmonising the laws of EU states.

Referring to recent gambling legislation changes in some EU countries, she acknowledged every state has the right to set their own laws for this industry, but vowed none will be allowed to discriminate against private enterprise.

The valuation of Europe's online betting trade comes after estimates the US could make up to $17.6 billion (£9 billion) through taxing internet gambling operations.
