Sands 'staying clear' of UK casino market

2008-02-19 10:25:15

Las Vegas Sands, one of the world's largest casino operators, has torn up plans to open a casino in the UK.

Spokesman William Weidner claimed Gordon Brown's decision to scrap the supercasino proposals was behind the move, as his company is not interested in running small-time operations.

He said: "The operators there in the UK worked the system very well, so they ended up with what they wanted - what I would consider to be sub-optimal, lousy little casinos that kept them in the game and kept us out."

Weidner added that the UK's system is now worse than ever, because instead of having vast casinos which can attract tourists and boost the local economy, there will just be slightly larger ones that take more money from communities.

Las Vegas Sands owns vast casinos in the world's two largest gambling cities, Macau and Las Vegas.
