Manchester's supercasino could still be a possibility following last minute talks between local officials and the government.
David Ottewell, a journalist at the Manchester Evening News, suggested MPs and council members had persuaded Whitehall not to go ahead with an announcement confirming the casino had been scrapped.
The statement had been expected to come today; however, the government has apparently listened to the argument that the casino idea cannot be discontinued without alternative regeneration plans in place.
East Manchester had been set to benefit from the gaming venue, which was designed to create more than 3,000 jobs and transform the economy of one of the city's poorest areas.
A reader of the paper stated his unhappiness at how much money is being wasted on the supercasino battle.
"Manchester city council is on standby to begin a legal challenge. Yet more of the ratepayers money will get wasted on 'professionals'," he said.
