Swansea 'to see jobs increase' following casino approval

2008-02-27 11:41:55

The Welsh city of Swansea is set to benefit from a new casino in the form of hundreds of jobs, it has been suggested.

Many vacancies are expected to be created by the venue, which will be one of the eight small casinos approved by the government yesterday, the Western Mail reports.

Local councillor Chris Holley promised that the 1,500 sq ft location will be regulated "in line with the new Gambling Act" and will make sure it does not lead to any extra "crime and disorder" in the region.

With just 80 gambling machines, the site will be significantly smaller than Manchester's proposed supercasino which was to feature over 1,000.

The supercasino plans were rejected by culture secretary Andy Burnham following Gordon Brown's announcement last year that it would be put on hold.

Manchester council is now going to sue the government for compensation.
