Big name Brits tumble in WSOP main event

2008-07-09 14:48:32

Several of the biggest names in UK poker playing were sent to the rail last night during day 2a of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event.

European Poker Tour champion Victoria Coren, Irish Poker Open winner Neil Channing, Hendon Mob member Joe Beevers and 2002 runner-up Julian Gardner were all knocked out of the Las Vegas competition yesterday evening.

Their eliminations follow the exits of arguably the two most decorated professionals from the British poker scene Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott and Roland de Wolfe on day one.

Despite these results, patriotic poker enthusiasts will still find famous faces to throw their support behind.

Barny Boatman, another Hendon Mob player, did make it through to day three, while Hampshire residents may wish to lend their backing to their former cricket star, Australian Shane Warne.

No competitor from the UK has ever won the WSOP main event, which has been running for the last 38 years.
