Ecclestone involved in F1 poker match-up

2008-07-23 15:37:42

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone got involved in a poker game over the weekend as he convinced the regular poker players from the Force India paddock to take part in a game at the Paddock Club in Hockenheim.

The UK businessman persuaded the likes of Robert Kubica, Michael Schumacher, Flavio Briatore and Vijay Mallya to take part, according to Brad Spurgeon's International Herald Tribune blog, with the stakes rumoured to be set at $1,000.

F1 drivers and team bosses join the burgeoning number of sports people familiar to UK gamblers who have taken up poker over the last few years.

Thomas Brolin, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Shane Warne, Jimmy White and Steve Davis are all famous faces to have enjoyed success at the game, while numerous actors and socialites have got involved too.

The recent Ante-Up For Africa charity poker event in Las Vegas attracted Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Abi Titmuss, among many others.
