Remote gambling popular 'because of convenience'

The convenience of remote gambling is the reason for its popularity among the over-65 demographic in the UK.

At least this is what has been suggested by Brian Wright of the Remote Gambling Association, who implied it is not really surprising that this is the fastest area of growth in the industry.

"Retired people are at home a lot more than people who are out working every day, so they have more time to actually access online sites and gamble by that medium," he remarked.

According to the UK Gambling Commission's July report, the number of over-65s participating in remote gaming rose from 2.2 per cent to 3.3 per cent in the year leading up to June 2008.

This is despite the sector failing to grow at all during the period, remaining at 8.8 per cent.

Mr Wright implied that the comfort of gambling at home, as well as the ability to smoke, could be among the reasons why more pensioners appear to be taking up remote gaming.
