UK gaming operators are ahead of their European counterparts when it comes to responsible gambling, an industry spokesman has said.
Andrew Lyman of the Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) suggested that some countries may restrict the ability of foreign firms to compete in their country on the grounds of social responsibility.
However, this is not a worthy excuse for allowing state-run companies to monopolise the marketplace, he explained, with some firms in other countries actually better in this sector.
"UK gambling operators, who already lead in the area of responsible gambling, are keen to expand into the European market," Mr Lyman remarked.
He added that he welcomes the recent reports that Sweden could be about to free up its gaming sector to let in foreign operators and said that several companies in the UK will be keen to move into the marketplace.
Socially responsible gambling is among ABB's chief aims and it looks to help bookmakers that operate in this manner to flourish.
