Google allows gaming companies to buy paid search ads

2008-10-17 12:26:00

Gaming operators looking to target gamblers in England, Scotland and Wales will now be able to do so through paid search advertisements on Google, it has been announced.

Starting this week, Google's Adwords will feature gambling adverts for the first time since restrictions were brought in last summer, in a move which the Telegraph believes will allow non-UK European Economic Area companies to expand into the British gaming market.

Adverts from gaming operators will be classified as "non-family safe", meaning they will not appear should the user have their safe search filter switched on.

In order to get adverts on to Google, the firms will also need to show a valid operating licence number and be registered with the UK's Gambling Commission.

Restrictions on gambling marketing in the UK were freed up last year and adverts from major operators, such as InterCasino, are now commonplace in magazines and on television screens.
