UK 'plans for more casinos'

2008-10-30 19:14:22

While government plans for the first supercasino in the UK have been shelved, there are plans to construct a number of smaller-sized casinos in the country, a new report has claimed.

The Betting & Gaming Market Report 2008 stated that despite the current economic uncertainty, betting and gaming has been found to be a more "recession-proof" activity than other.

PokerPages.com reported this week that London's Hippodrome nightclub and theatre is set to run a casino and designated poker room following its recent license approval.

The £8 billion application was submitted earlier this year by United Leisure gaming.

Craig Bayliss, of law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner, said that the approval marks a "landmark case" for licensing in the UK.

"It is the first time that a multi-use facility has been granted a gaming license in London and it gives the green light for what will be a great new attraction here."

Meanwhile, the 2008 report also asserted that online gambling is set to enjoy "considerable growth" in the coming year.
