Casino plans 'in the works' for Middlesbrough

2008-11-07 20:02:42

Plans are underway to construct a large casino in Middlesbrough, the Evening Gazette has reported.

Middlesbrough was one of the eight towns and cities selected by the UK government to be the casino's new home. Meanwhile, other towns, including Scarborough, are set to be home to smaller casinos.

The facility in Middlesbrough will feature up to 150 gaming machines and will have a gaming area measuring between 1,500 square metres and 3,500 square metres.

Middlesbrough Council's licensing committee is set to select the successful bidder which will win the casino's operating license. The newspaper reported that the winning bidder will likely be announced in 2010.

If no one comes forward with what we want, we will not have a large casino," said Dave Budd, Middlesbrough council's executive councillor for regeneration and economic development.

He added that a casino could become "an important part of the regeneration jigsaw" and added that the council will exercise "an enormous degree of control" on what happens with the new project.

This week, the city is holding a number of events to commemorate Remembrance Day.
