The UK's latest European Poker Tour (EPT) champion, William Fry of Nottingham, has suggested some good fortune may have been involved in his first major tournament victory at the start of this month.
Speaking to Poker News, the Nottingham card sharp said that he was kept away from many of the big names taking part in the competition, with Annette Obrestad, Kara Scott and Johnny Lodden being the few that he was forced to take on.
"I did actually avoid a host of top stars," he remarked. "Maybe I was lucky in that respect."
Fry came up against Obrestad and Scott - " two very strong ladies" - at the same table, before facing off with Lodden on the last day of the tournament.
Obrestad won the World Series of Poker Europe main event in 2007, while Lodden is a multiple cash finisher on the EPT.
Scott is perhaps better known for hosting poker competitions rather than appearing them, having presented Poker Night Live and Sky Poker.
