Remote gambling sector "will be affected" by economic downturn

2008-11-19 12:23:49

The remote gambling industry in the UK will not be able to survive the ongoing economic downturn completely unscathed, according to one expert.

Brian Wright, the Remote Gambling Association's director of business, said that the sector "is not recession proof in any way", due to many gaming operators being publicly listed and, as such, vulnerable to any turmoil in the stock markets.

However, the industry is unlikely to be hit too hard, he suggested, because most people only gamble small stakes, meaning that any cutting back on spending should not have a major impact on revenue.

The UK Gambling Commission released its latest Remote Gambling Participation report in October.

It found that 9.3 per cent of adults had taken part in remote gambling of some form during the previous month with computers the most popular gaming tools (7.5 per cent), ahead of mobile phones (2.7 per cent) and television (two per cent).
